French Defense Minister: 20 million euros earmarked for Lebanon security

French Minister of Defense, Jean-Yves Le Drian, on Monday stressed that France was working on reinforcing the Lebanese army, highlighting the necessity to cooperate with the military institution in its battle against terrorism.
French Ambassador to Lebanon, Emmanuel Bonne, hosted today a reception ceremony at the Embassy, in honor of Minister Le Drian, upon the occasion of his visit to Lebanon.
“Today I have confidence in the capacity of the Lebanese to achieve the state budget and the legislative elections; it is important to carry on this dynamic and elect a Parliament that guarantees correct representation,” Le Drian said in his word.
“Lebanon is in the front row against Daesh,” he added, stressing that the LAF, by defending Lebanon, also contributes to defending Europe’s security.
“It is natural to grant huge priority to our cooperation with the Lebanese army, through providing equipment and training, or through sending military assistance. We are doing this because we know that the Lebanese army is a reliable partner, who overcame divisions and is present across the nation providing valuable and legitimate protection for the Lebanese institutions in times of tension,” he underlined.
Le Drian also revealed intention to step up cooperation in the future. “I am glad to assert that the exceptional contribution announced by President Francoise Hollande in April 2016 will be realized in the coming weeks. The Lebanese army shall receive the means to combat explosive bombs, in addition to armored vehicles, training, and munitions. 20 million euros will be also earmarked for security in Lebanon this year.”
On France’s participation in the UNIFIL, Le Drian highlighted the responsibility to cooperate with the Lebanese Army in the south.
“A strong Lebanon, with strong institutions and a string army, is what France is working on within the frame of its cooperation with Lebanon, as well as through its commitment to the UN and the UNIFIL,” he concluded.
