FPM Says Fair Electoral Law Inevitable, Talks with AMAL in ‘Advanced’ Stage

The Free Patriotic Movement on Monday stressed that it is inevitable to reach a “fair electoral law” while revealing that talks with the AMAL Movement to sign a rapprochement agreement have reached an “advanced stage.”
“As for the electoral law… the FPM has not spared any effort or initiative and we have not despaired yet,” the FPM’s political council said in a statement issued after its monthly meeting, noting that “contacts and consultations are still ongoing with everyone.”
“We have no choice but to reach a just and fair electoral law based on proportional representation, which can take several forms,” it added.
Turning to the issue of the FPM’s dialogue with AMAL Movement, the council said talks have reached an “advanced stage.”
“There is a serious dialogue aimed at reaching what resembles an agreement, a memorandum of understanding or a declaration, and we hope that will happen soon,” the council added.
“We made agreements in the past with Hizbullah, the Lebanese Forces and the Lebanese Communist Party, and today with the AMAL Movement, but this does not mean that they are bilateral agreements targeted against other parties,” the political council explained, noting that the agreements are aimed at “pacifying the general situation.”
